        History of Chain Maille

Chain maille is a flexible mesh of small metal rings linked together in patterns called weaves. The earliest chain maille armor is attributed to the Celts around 400 BCE. After battles with the Celts, the Roman Empire adopted chain maille

armor, and its use spread throughout Europe, Africa, the

Middle East, Asia and Japan. While pointed and edged

weapons were in use, chain maille was popular in most of the   world. As the use of firearms increased, chain maille was less   effective as armor, though its use continued through the

16th century in Europe and until the 18th century in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Chain maille as adornment began in the late 19th century with Victorian chain maille purses and accessories, and evolved into jewelry in the mid-20th century. Since then many new weaves were created. Using precious metals and gemstones, chain maille has become an elevated jewelry art.

This is a great opportunity to practice chain maille skills for  Kristina Chadwick's upcoming Caged Crystals class!

            SUNKEN TREASURE 'The Black Pearl'

            by Helen McIntyre

A Helen McIntyre original design, the intricate beaded SUNKEN TREASURE 'The Black Pearl' was created exclusively for SJBS and generously gifted by the artist to support our education and community service initiatives.

SUNKEN TREASURE 'The Black Pearl' is an Octahedron with eight triangular faces. It was born from Helen's explorations using the Cellini Peyote technique with diverse geometric shapes (triangles, squares, pentagons). Her unique talents with shape combinations, color and bead size variations create the beautiful swirls, undulations and sparkle in this truly amazing piece.

SUNKEN TREASURE originally appeared in the UK Beadworkers Guild Journal, and won the vote for the readers' favorite project in the first 100 issues!

SUNKEN TREASURE 'The Black Pearl' is constructed entirely of beads and black pearls. It measures approximately 4- inches tip-to-tip in all directions. The bead loop hanger adds approximately 2-inches. Value: $400.

The artist resides in Knebworth, a village and civil parish in the north of Hertfordshire, England.

See more of her amazing creations in her Etsy shop.
