  NEW SCHOOL BEADED BOX

  by JULIA PRETL

  A Julia S. Pretl original design and creation, this intricate beaded New School box was generously donated by the artist to support SJBS education and community service initiatives. It is featured on the cover of her book Little Bead Boxes.

  The inspiration for her "New School" beaded box is Dutch graphic artist M. C. Escher’s work using color and flattened patterning of interlocking forms, which became his favorite theme.

  The complexity of Julia Pretl’s New School beaded box design, coupled with pops of color that delineate the fishes’ eyes and change in direction, aptly represent her unique body of work.

  This New School box constructed entirely of beads measures approximately 3” x 2” W x 3” H. It features a reinforced hemmed neck for stability and a lid with inner walls that securely seat it in place on the box. Value:  $400

  About the Artist…
  

  Julia S. Pretl is a renowned bead artist, best known for her innovative, intricately patterned, multi-dimensional beaded boxes and vessels designs.

  Creative since early childhood, she studied graphic design and illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Soon after, she discovered a passion for bead weaving, and eventually combined these talents as a way to teach others through workshops, patterns, and her ever-popular books: Little Bead Boxes and Julia Pretl’s Big Book of Beadwork.

  A wearable beaded necklace will invite the student to learn three different techniques. The rope consists of beaded netting, the Navettes are surrounded by peyote, and the face by bead embroidery. The project is suitable for Advanced Novice to Advanced students.

  Angela has been a long-time bead enthusiast and South Jersey Bead Society member. She last taught for SJBS in May of 2022. She has given classes at various venues, including other bead societies. Through the years she has elevated her expertise to a high design and teaching level.

  Kit price: The cost of the kit is $42.00. It comes in 3 colorways. 1. Rose gold with smaller pale pink navettes and a larger complimentary green navette 2. Bright gold with smaller jewel-tone aqua navettes and a larger amber navette. 3. Silver with smaller jet black navettes and a larger ruby red navette.

  Peter Raskin, owner of The Birds and the Beads store is hosting the SJBS Bead Rendezvous Saturday, June 1^st, 2024 during store hours from 10am to 5pm.

  Come join us for some beading fun. Mingle with fellow beaders, shop at the bead store, and work on a current project or UFO (unfinished beading project). This is a great opportunity to share ideas and learn techniques from other beaders while in good company doing what we love best, BEADING.

  • In person at the Katz JCC: Check out the prizes and buy tickets on-site, then drop them in the brown bag of the item number(s) you hope to win. Allocate as many tickets per item as you wish.

  • Zoom: Check out the prizes, choose a Ticket Purchase option by 'registering' for this event, and pay by PayPal. Prior to the event, a SJBS Auction Committee member will email your ticket numbers, ask how you'd like to allocate them, then drop them in the brown bag of the item number(s) you would like to win.

  The deadline to buy tickets online is June 1st

   Prize drawings begin promptly at 7:15 p.m. If your number matches the  number drawn, you win that prize! Since this is a hybrid event, you  need not be present to win.   2024 Bead Retreat with Kassie Shaw!

  October 25-27, 2024

  Kassie Shaw is a renowned bead weaving expert from western North Carolina. Her style is down to earth and wearable but she also loves to make bold pieces with lots of contrast and pops of color.

  

   Kassie was first attracted to making      jewelry twenty years ago as a project for  an arts elective in college. Soon after, she  discovered seed beads and off loom bead  weaving. A former Designer of the Year,  her work has been featured in and on the  cover of Beadwork Magazine. She is also  recognized as a Starman Beads Trend-  setter Designer.    Dragon Scale Bracelet

   is a dimensional netted rope using

   2-hole  triangle beads and 2-hole  diamond beads on memory wire.

  
  

   Two additional variations of the design,  a bangle bracelet and one with a clasp,  will also be provided.

  
  

   Galaxy Star Orb is a fabulous 3-dimensional design glowing with  multiple colors of super duos and size 11º seed beads. Kassie  uses negative space  throughout the beaded  structure to  create illusions of  planets  and stars.

   Venue: The Malvern Retreat House in the placid hills of  Malvern PA. The  well-kept grounds, facility cleanliness, spacious accommodations, very  good food, and bucolic setting are sure to offer a memorable experience.  All rooms in this year’s campus building are single rooms only.
